Nigeria: Where is the Decorum?

On September 29, 2006 / By Imnakoya / In Corruption, Governance, Nigeria

The Nigeria is a nation known for many things called, but docurum isn’t one of those words one can remotely associate with the country that sees itself as the giant of Africa. Talk of a giant that lacks ”propriety and good taste in conduct or appearance”, using Merriam-Website definition of decorum.

The facesoff between the president and his deputy has reached a crescendo, where all forms of allegations and accusations are been tendered by the day. It appears the attack hounds of each camp spend their nights brainstorming on strategies and spins to use for the next day. Nigerians, have heard tales of financial sleaze, now its murder allegation!:

“Elements suspected to be loyal to the vice president have become even more desperate, this time threatening the lives of some ministers,” the president’s spokesman Uba Sani said in a statement released to Reuters on Friday.

“In a well laid out plan codenamed ‘Search and Destroy’, the following ministers and aides have been marked for elimination,” the statement said, listing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nasir el-Rufai, Justice Minister Bayo Ojo, Information Minister Frank Nweke and other Obasanjo loyalists.

Nigerians need a good break from this mudracking. It has stopped being funny and relevant since yesterday. What Nigerians want to see is the national assembly using its authority is some ways, so far our senators and reps have been playing their useless game of taking sides and not using their conscience. If the setting for this ugly drama was in the bad old 80′s Nigerians would have since woke up to some not-so-pleasant martial music last week!

  1. Congrats on your brand new blog.

I strongly believe that all discerning Nigerians must voice their displeasure at the ugly political gymnastics that our politicians are shamefully partaking-in, everyday.

Enough is enough. We need a new breed of objective and competent politicians, to effectively handle the affairs of Nigeria. I’m fed-up with the current ones, whose only objective is how to embezzle public funds.

  2. Thanks. The new officials-in waiting (come 2007) have been awfully quiet, I expected them to have capitalized on the duel between these two and make some strong statements.

  3. well i believe that Nigerians could say something but its just that most are scared because they are mostly the masses and those that are not in the masses are scared of what may happen to them

  4. [...] Atiku has weathered some recent turbulent political storms which literally pitched him against the president and the ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which suspended him following some corruption allegations. [...]
