Nigeria: It is a Good Day!

On December 8, 2006 / By Imnakoya / In Democracy, Nigeria

LadojaIt’s a good day for this man: Rashidi Ladoja, an embattled Nigerian governor. For 11 months, he suffered the humiliation of being easily out-played by some slimy self-serving state legislators who are also cronies of a demented local political godfather. Ladoja’s unconstitutional removal from office was made possible by some state legislators who decided to undercut and manipulate the system they took oaths to protect.

Investing his fate in the often treacherous Nigerian judiciary system, Ladoja challenged his removal in court. This was really the only option he had, after all wasn’t the legal court created to interpret the law and serve as a buffer between the executive and the legislative arms? The judiciary is the third arm (and leg) of government.

The Nigerian media outlets are emblazoned with the story: Ladoja won his case and he will be reinstated.

It is a great day for democracy; a day Ladoja has been waiting to see since his removal. It is certainly a great day for Nigerians. It is a rarity to see such a sound display of justice and common sense. The judiciary as the third arm of government, has lived up to its responsibilities as an unbiased arbitrator and a “society stabilizer”.
