Nigeria Direct at Nigeria.gov.ng — the supposed official website for Nigerian government — appears to have suffered a catastrophic accident moment after the last administration left office.
Nigeria.gov.ng’s screenshot on December 18, 2008:
I remember blogging about Nigeria Direct in 2005, when the information Minister then stated as a information gateway, Nigeria Direct:
“will provide a one-stop access to everything about Nigeria, Nigerians, the government and its agencies, and investment opportunities in the country.”
The original plan “called for the web portal to be accessible in 135 Nigerian languages, and the option of being accessed in 13 international languages.”
This is what the information minster stated in 2005: Read the blog entry on Grandiose Parlor.
Nigerian Direct never got that far, and at moment, it appears broken and disjointed, and a pitiful reminder of the inefficiencies of Nigerian government.
I think it’s time for all Nigerian web enthusiasts to come together and create a befitting web presence for our country, pro bono.
Oh yes, we can!
Was nigeriadirect a success when it was in operation? Was it effective? If not then what have we missed?
Yes Nigerian Web enthusiasts coming together to create a befitting Web presence for Nigeria is indeed a good idea. Unfortunately I dont see it happening for the Nigerian government is already suffering from Paranoi and dead scared of Nigerian bloggers especially those in the Diaspora. OH YES WE CAN, BUT OH NO NIGERIA WONT.
The demise of Nigeriadirect is another reminder of failure stories of things Nigerian.

Even though it didn’t have all the bell and whistles promised, Nigeria Direct was way better then than now, that is the point.

Then if Nigeria Direct is still in operation, let us visit the site to make our views known on what has gone wrong, and how it could improve.
Is it open to the public (sorry dont know much about its modus operandi?
