Lagos Safe City Project to install 10,000 surveillance cameras around Lagos.
The primary purpose of the surveillance cameras is to improve security and traffic management, and ensure prompt emergency response services. The cameras are solar-powered and wireless.
Can this work and sustainable in Lagos?
The idea will have a good chance of succeeding if managed and maintained by the private sector.
See video footage. You may need to fast forward the lengthy intro (a full-fledged story by itself) to the main gist.
One thing stands out about the Lagos Governor…he’s really impacting Lagos!
I agree that Fashola is making good progress and imparting positively and with pride on Lagos. His ideas, agenda and innovation could all work if the mindset of the people permits them to work; if they are sustainable and followed on by future governors, past 2011. The people have their part to play while all future Lagos governments also have their parts to play. All in all we now see why all future Lagos governors must be chosen with care to ensure that they follow up on the good works of Fashola’
The security cum surveillance cameras would work if not sabotaged by the same people that know where they are located, how they are operated and IF KEPT AWAY FROM THE NIGERIAN POLICE, WHO MOST LIKELY WILL SELL OUT TO ROBBERS.

This is a very good idea, but there are lots things to be tackled and I do not think this should be the first, people are hungry, no shelter, no power supply and we think the next thing is security cameras? I am very sure these cameras have night vision and all that, which means that they are very expensive. I believe what we need is constant power supply, if this can be taking care of, cost of production will reduce and things would become cheaper for the people, then we can now have cameras for surveillance.

@olofofoeke, quite right there are many areas of needs for the people of Lagos. If not for the gross security risks and menace of armed robbers that snuff out the lives of people daily (like what’s happening at Ibadan), I may have agreed with you that shelter, food, powersupply and even education issues should be priority. But I believe prioritising security and safety of the people in Lagos is quite right. From the track record of governor Fashola so far, I am apt to say that those areas you mentioned will be looked into. The man is really trying and will do more. What he is doing should be sustained and followed on by subsequent governors in Lagos. I personally I pray that Fashola considers running for a 2nd term for it will be too soon and disastrous if he leaves i 2011. Everyone knows that the issue of food and power supply are very important. Governor Fashola please attack and attend to these problems as soon as possible. Regards

I am agree with you that he’s doing a great job, and I do not think anyone should say otherwise, but this is about priority, we have more bandits on the streets coz some of these people can’t afford the regular needs of the society, I am very sure that you either an average or above average citizen,so you may not understand the pains of these people, and the most important thing to people in your kind of class is always security, because food and shelter is not a problem. Where there is light, it is very difficult for darkness to stay, so provide constant power supply and street lights everywhere, trust me crime would reduce by 40% and then security cameras can take care of the rest. Gov Raji Fashola is really doing a great job and should keep it up, but that is just my personal opinion.

@olofofoeko, Sorry to differ strongly with your mindset on “and the most important thing to people in your kind of class is always security, because food and shelter is not a problem”, because you dont know me and dont know what my ideals are in life. In expressing my opinion I did not bother on the personal for this I believe deflates good arguments and I can tell you that I know and feel and care for the lot of the oppressed, the underdogs and the very disillusioned in my dear Nigeria, the land of my birth. I hear the cries of my people daily even in my sleep and feel their pain. I am a “man of the people” and not of the elites.
I of course agree with you on the priorities stated, but sometimes it makes sense to also go into the mindset of others to feel why particular actions are taken for better understanding. Oh by the way, crime will definitely reduce when poverty is aleviated. But also the issue of armed robbers who target banks and bullions and kill innocent citizens which can bring down the wider economy of a state, should be addressed as a priority as ell, especially in a state that is being set aside as a model state, where tourism and others will be increased. All the issues are of course important olofofoeko.
Another priority we should both mention to Fashola is the Nigerian police. When there is life there is hope. Peace

Well I am sorry if I misjudged you, but this isn’t about an argument, this is about a better Lagos. About armed robbers, these people see how our government officials are pen robbers. They have destroyed our country and are still doing that. Why should a gas producing Nation pay almost 3000 for gas? Why should there be scarcity? Why do we collect dollars from people that buy our crude oil why not Naira? Do you think Femi otedola and Mikiano Generators would want constant power supply? Why is there no constant water supply? Why does our currency continue to fall when the economic crisis round the would hasn’t had so much impact on us? Why why why? Really Fashola is answering some of those question by telling us things can work, but what is your answer?
January 20, 2009 at 2:04 pm
@Olofofoeko, am sure you have all the answers, judging even from your name
so why do you want to test me? Sorry when I used the word “argument” it didnt carry a negative connotation as you think. I will like to however say that on two of the issues you raised above 1. About collecting dollars instead of Naira; this could actually be a good thing hence the boost in Nigerian foreign reserve. 2. About fall of currency, sorry but the global economic crisis impacts on even Nigeria hence the word Global. The question is, what will Nigeria do to rectify this?
For change to occur, we look at the big picture, study it and plan the right strategy to effect it. If we decide to tackle everything on one go, we could burn out. Slowly but surely like Fashola believes, things would work. All these old/evil taskmasters who do not care about the common man will one day meet their nemesis. Ghana had it until Jerry Rawlings and now see what progress Ghana has made.
Nigeria is yet to wake up to reality, but we shall wake up for no matter how strong the anaesthetic is, the effect will wear off one day. Anyway, thanks for the sharing with you which I enjoy. Apology accepted. Chin up for believe you me, ojo gbogbo ni tole, ojo kan, one day go be one day…
