Believe it, this the same furious Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Yes, during the Koola Lobito Band high-life days in the 60s. His name then was Fela-Ransome Kuti.

He sounded good in highlife as he sounded good in Afro beats. Fela was a talented musician, despite his “craze” lifestlye. Well loved he was and will always be remembered in the Nigerian Music and worldwide. Do you have the Kula Lobitos track proper?

No I don’t have the track.

Our young readers may not have known that Fela was a producer in the music department of Radio Nigeria, Lagos, then NBC, when he came back from UK with a degree in music. His militancy was borne out of his stay in the US and close contact with the Black Panters. I never really think his exploits with the Kula Lobitos ever left his musical genre throughout his career. Do you guys ever imagine what the Nigerian music scene would have been like if hi-life greats like Crossdale Juba and Rex Lawson had lived into the 70s, 80s and 90s? Maybe hi-life would have assumed its rightful place in global music genre. Please spend more time to listen to early hi-life hits of Ambrose Campbell, Theophilus Iwalokun, Victor Olaiya, Steven Amechi, E.T. Mensah, just to mension a few. God bless y’ol.

@ Victor: I share your sentiments. Nigeria has had some fantastic musicians. Their brand of music I’m afraid is now on verge of extinction, if not already extinct. Thanks for the comment.

Now the challenge at hand will be to get the Hip Hop artists revive highlife and sort of blend/add to their contemporary brand of music.
Imnakoya, nothing really goes into extinction and hopefully Highlife will not do so. For example, as the world is round, old things are made new and then dissappear again (temporarily), only to reappear. Just like Brocade and Wonyosi made a come back twice in the fashion industry over the past 35 years, I pray and hope that Highlife will make a comeback. I still believe orur Hip Hop Artists could revive it, and make it appealing to young and old listerners.
