Ondo State Logo - good, bad or straight-up ugly?

On November 17, 2009 / By Imnakoya / In Governance, Nigeria

My south western Nigerian state of Ondo launched its new state logo over the weekend. This is what it looks like:

With a decorative border, it looks like this:

On face value, the logo isn’t bad, I just don’t get the thought behind the border…. it makes the logo look like a tapestry ready for display on the wall!

As I questioned during a conversation yesterday, who was the designer? Not that it mattered anymore at this point, I just wondered if this is the best design the state could get.

I wonder if jobs like these could be thrown into the public domain — yes, let the state have an audition for the design! Get the people involved and award the contract to the best designer. Creating buzz around government project will be an easy way of getting community participation — something that’s in great need in Nigeria today.

Back to the logo, is this the best Ondo state can come up with? What about the tagline… written in Yoruba? If I were an Ijaw man, I won’t be pleased at all. Ondo state is not monolingual, that’s a fact.

Overall, I would give the logo a 60% pass grade. Your thoughts …?

  1. I’m not sure…I can’t feel the logo, it’s too bland, maybe this is a good thing. Certainly, I agree with the tagline not being in Yoruba only, and seeking public input in this project.

  2. I’m Ijaw, and Ondo State resident, the yoruba tagline is cool, but will be better if also written in all major languages.

  3. The 2nd image: Tapestry, yes! it looks like an art work than a logo. Don’t like it, sorry.

  4. Actually the logo better without the border, at least it looks more like a logo that way. No a bad job.

  5. When the image is reduced to fit a letterhead, the details will get lost…Not the best design there is.

  6. Ondo State is majorly Yoruba, hence the writing in Yoruba (I suppose). It can’t be written in all Nigerian languages and will even be too much to have it in WaZoBia, and lastly English is out of question (so I agree with it being written in Yoruba.

As for the Logo design, better without the border and still depicts the Sunshine State symbolism; but could be better overall.

  7. Well, I don’t think the logo is good enough, besides, it slogan “ise loogun ise” is the slogan of The Polytechnic of Ibadan, and the “O” with the Sunshine is just an adaptation of the Ibadan polytechnic, all in all to me professionally, it looks like an entry for a secondary school contest
