Niger state government has procured 50 oxygen fitted ambulances for highways at the cost of N3.6 billion (about $24million UDS) through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This is comes to about N70million per ambulance (about $480,000 USD). This is an outrageously inflated price!

The most advanced ambulance (Advanced Life Support) system, equipped with transport monitor, ventilator, defibrillator and other life-saving gadgets, plus oxygen (a standard feature on any ambulance) goes for about N22million ($150,000 USD) maximum. And this includes shipping/freight and custom charges.

Must people be robbed in order to save their lives?

If N3.5 billion is spent on procuring ambulances, how much will be spent on the hospitals that receive and treat the accident victims? Or managing the ambulances? Or rescuing the victims from the accident wrecks?

This is not how to save lives, sir!

  1. This is highway robbery!

  2. Maybe the report meant to state – 350 million rather than 3.5 billion. It’s absurd and criminal to spend that kind of state money on ambulances.

  3. The report states the ambulances come with oxygen, as if oxygen availability is a special feature on ambulances! EFCC needs to lock up everyone involved in this project. Thieves!!!

  4. @Ajayi – you know why oxygen got special mention in the report? Most ambulances in Nigeria are nothing but mere buses with leather benches!

So if Niger state has some with oxygen, they have done well!

This is really sad though…in a state where the governor calls himself the master servant.

  5. I hope it there is an error the report, and it’s meant to be 350million rather than 3.5 billion.
