Discerning governance

Looking through the pictures below, I wonder what governance (the activity of governing) is if indicators such as simple and vital infrastructure like motorable roads are not available.

What manner of government is there in Nigeria? Who is governed, by whom, and for what purpose?

At which point is government considered a failure? How is such consideration made, and by whom?

Another election is around the corner, would this be another futile and expensive exercise, or a remarkable step towards good governance?

One wouldn’t need to look far to decide.

  1. You raise a great question and offer some amazing examples upon which to base an answer. I intend to post your question on my blog for students of Advanced Placement Comparative Government and Politics.

    Thank you.

  2. Thanks for the comment Ken. I’m honored that you find my rants relevant and useful to your cause. Cheers.

  3. Those photos are an indictment on the backward governments we have had since 1960. Many thanks to those that contributed to the slideshow. “What manner of government is there in Nigeria? Who is governed, by whom, and for what purpose?” are excellent questions. May I add a variation. Who governs and on whose behalf? In effect, Nigeria is no different from Somalia or The UK where many are asking the same questions. However, the motivation for a good answer would not satisfy anyone. Our VIPs as Fela puts it have failed in every way possible. Our new idiot-leaders-to-be are proposing a better Nigeria that most do not need. We simply want our country to be a good one.
